In this latest update I will be looking at the work done at a website called KentIndex.Com which you may recall birthed MaxWebEdit. It has been sometime since the guys at KentIndex left the MaxWebPortal fold and started up on thier own and to be honest support was never that great. When MaxWebMODs come about there was a lot more activity and the 1.5 project has gathered the rest of the cummunity since the fall of MWP-Original.

However these guys it seems have not been taking it easy at all. There is a total of three developments that I know of that use parts of MaxWebEdit they are MWEdit (of course), EnchantedVision (Artists Home) and KentIndex (AKA Globally Local). All in all that is a lot of work for a team of such a small size to compleate.

The quote about to follow points to the latest development that allows KentIndex users the right to recomend new companies to be added to the index.

If they could be talked into makeing a GNU release of this it would have great implications for the way we do the MaxWebLinks.

I am now officially pissed of with the world most useless hosting company. This company (fasthosts.co.uk) are so crap I can not even get hold of them by phone! I spent almost �100 this year with them (that's about $200ish) for a service I can not use.

Although I did hear a rumour that some MaxWebbers were out to defeat the GNU GPL.

While examineing the MaxWeb-o-sphear I happened apon this article written not in the useuall haunts of rather dull and lifeless MaxWeb so called "Dev" sites but on a wiki that seems a little absed on the MaxWeb

I quote it in it's fullness as it makes great reading:

"The GNU General License (v2) is a legal document it is a license to use and distribute code.
However there have been certain iregularities within the Max Web GNU v2 Implimentation.
These are detailed below.
footerUp to version 1.34 Max Web Portal was 'closed house' development and Max Web Edit was launched to open up the development model to address some seriouse lacking.
The first issue was whole bunches of code were not correctly documented. In fact they were not documented at all. The MWP 1.34 guy had hidden code all over the show to enforse the footer and keep it in place.
It turns out that he was over stepping his bounds and had little in the GNU Licnese to allow him to demand the footer be in place.
So Infinity re-did the footer code and killed of the bad code.
GNU MD5The MD5 code include carried the overbarring MWP lisence claim header dispite having no Max Web stuff in it.
While the header of comment giveing rights to use but not share as a snippit came second. This rases moral and ethical issues if nothing else.
MWE? 1.5Max Web Portal.info raises two new moral and ethical issues. First not enough is done to namespace this new project and mark the difference between it and the original development which has admitadly appeared to stall.
The OSI might likely say that this is a fair move on the part of the MWP 1.5 group who are using Open Source Development license (GNU v2).
However they are not useing the techniques of open source of development. It is still closed house like MWP 1.34 before it and Snitz before that.
They are currently examining the possibility of paying the way for Max Web and yet they talk of obscuring the code which would not make this OSI compliant dispite the license they use.
Becuase of this apparent lack of honour among the developers I have had cause to consider just how much of the footer they nag on about can be removed and still stick to the letter/spirit of the GNU v2.
Any experts? "

It would seem the news on the vine is taht MaxWebPortal 1.5 (a user Hack/Edit) will sport a DIV based theme engine of a far more flexable nature.

This could be good for the eye candy and we all love a razamataz site but what about the deeper functions?

Over the comming weeks this intrepid reporter will be trying to get tot he bottom of these issues.

Greatings MODDERS some news at last to report. It seems that MaxWebEdit has sneakily updated to use DOM-Savey browsers (most) to hide and show eliments without knowing their name. This means that the theme itself can carry the header that holds the open close code which is a mix of JavaScript, Max_Theme and CSS.

Not only that but it seems the 1.5 project has taken said clever hack and added it to their project which is now promising a serviceable release some time soon.

I have to wonder how this will effect MWEdit who are now said to be working on a top secret project called "Infinity" which is said to carry an XML core!!!

Yes Modding fans slashdot or rather Slashdot's RSS feed has arrived at Max Web thanks to a clever new toy from the people at MaxWebEdit (Or MWEdit as they seem to call themselves).
They've taken the links section and via the magic of XML (and a little carefull categorising) have used it to store XML feed addresses. They currently support 4 variants of RSS and ATOM but I am told that there is no real limit as to what can be added.

We this will be dull. After some flurries of news over at Edit I had hoped to see similar activity at MWP-MOD and 1.5 but no. No one is doing anything.

So instead I will ask some questions and hope that I provoke some answers.

WME and Mod-n-theme (while there were about) and MaxWebPortalMOD all have the good grace to carry a different name to show there are not the original implimentation. Why are 1.5 not doing the same?

Are they special? Do they have Max (or whoever was the dude who started it?) - what?

All those and other questions unanswered in the next hopefully more news worthy entry.

Anti-US feelings on the rise.

There is a rising tide of general annoyance with US web users. (not only because the US is still spam central at 86% although this doesn't help, I'm sure.) For a single (new) reason - the US Elections.

The general feeling among non-US users (who make up more than 60% of web users) is that the level of mention of that which is arguably an internal affair has now reached the point that can be called abuse. (I have to admit that I find the focus on US elections in slashdot news irritating as a non-US human.)

But this is simply a symptom of a much wider problem that can be embodied by the phrase: "I hate the US!". However, this goes way beyond a few irrational and nasty terrorists with a preference for blowing things up. It is focused strongly in Europe where, (with the man on the street), the general feeling is that it is safer to fight against the US in a war than with them as they tend to only shoot thier own guys. The average European citizen can be heard to exclaim at least once a week "What do you expect - they're Americans!" in the same condescending tones we tend to save for talking about naughty children. The UK, for example, has a wealth of amusing "In America they..." style stories and the "Arrogant American" has now surpassed the "foolish Irishman" in the general humour of pub jokes.

This feeling has led to a UK best seller
"Why Do People Hate America?"

The Independent (UK national newspaper) calls it "required reading." which is generally taken as an indicator of national opinion. while Noam Chomsky is quoted as saying it "contains valuable information that we should know, over here, for our own good, and the world's."

This brings us full circle back to the question of how exactly are Americans helping their national image with the current torrent of political debate that can be fairly repetitive. What do you slashdotters think about this potential world-wide PR disaster for America?

MaxWebEdit V1.2 is out now!!

This was released solely to ensure that there was more widely available a copy of MaxWeb. It contains a number of experimental features and comes with no guarantees. At time of launch it was line for line the same as used here."

MWE have announced the release of a "testing" final version to ensure that users can get Max Web if they need it. This comes as news of a set back to the promised release of MWE and the news of 1.5 from another crew of Max Webbers. Is this going to be a product war?

Apparently not as MW-Edit have said that they are waiting for 1.5 so they can add it to the project.

The latest version of MWP version 1.5 is about to hit the download and it is good. The new theme method allows multiple changeable themes and any number of MODs have now become standard. 1.5 is to 1.3 as 1.3 was to pen and paper!

I feel a deep and abiding shock at the fall of MaxWebProtal - forums. I had thaught them part of the mainstay of MaxWebbing, possibly forever.

I miss already the gental banter and the creaky group dynamics. I remember the need for change and did not ever comprihend that this might be that change.

I am stuned and awed in equall measure.

I am stunned byt he brutal reality of the ending and morn the passing of that site like I would an old friend. Yet there is a hope and a goal. From this there will arise a champion, a new site a forward projection of the development. This site will be the one that gains most momentum and takes the lead. There will be a new single entity that will lead the others.

It is the dawn of the second age of MaxWeb! Where we go from here is up to you.

It would seem that Max Web Portal is dead. It died honerably putting up a fight against evil hacker-crackers and is not expected to come back.

However rising like a phinex from the ashes come three new sites.

MaxWebPortal-Mods who seem to be well organised and are the natural prograssion from talks that took place on and off site before MWP died.

Mod n theme - a sub site from Frozen winds that seems to eb doing the same kind of thing as MWP-M

MWEdit aka MaxWeb Edit (MWE) - This site seems to be diverging some what but have also opened their doors to members of the MaxWeb World and seem to be giving support.

Only time will tell if MWP will see version 1.4 or not or indeed if the original makers have moved onto other things.

These "affiliate" marketing methods user invasive third party cookies and 1 by 1 remote loaded graphics and masked URLs that can definitely imping on your privacy.

Thankfully you can block third party cookies and you can get IE6 plug ins that refuse 1 x 1 graphics.

We have decided upon the following rules for the mod site:

Domain names registered for site, all three will point the mod site: maxwebportalmods.com, maxwebportalmods.org, maxwebportalmods.net

What version of MWP do we use: MaxWebPortal v1.35

Hosting and mirrors: hosting is planned to be done by people who already have sites and are donating their space and bandwidth.

We just need people to visit the site often to check for new members and posts: JBoomer4, bklbk,

Admins: JBoomer4, jctent01 (blkbk)

Testers/Reviewers: etruitt, DarkAngel,

Security:

Moderators: any one interested let blkbk or JBoomer4 know

Rules: Mods must include install instructions, screen shot, ease of use rating, in zip or rar file only.

Download area will have programs or links for zip, rar programs.

Will "require" approval before they can be posted. Have a reviewer verify everything and then show it in "downloads".

Have examples of mods hosted on the actual MODs site. Once approved we can create a subfolder for each mod with a clean install of MWP and just that mod.
Can be used for testing and demoing. May link to a single db.

Do: theme/mod upload, tester approval, only then move to download.

Author uploads one compressed file. The file is to include screen shot, mod files, instructions, version, ease of use, description.

It is none other than a file mirror and storage point.

Eventually the Database could be left behind standardising the data connection and even allowing a PERL/PHP port!

It is with these words that Max Web Edit's so called Mr 3rd Normal Form whets our appitite and sugests a whole new future with a totally revilutionary MOD.

The question now is of course how can this possibly pay out? One man (or woman the web being what it is) would be unlikely to re-write an entire application such as Max Web Edit into an XML app'.

However, if one person or group were to do this before project Huricane compleats it could potentially eclipse Huricane and even replace Max Web compleatly.

Games MODs - A selection of those we found

The amazing MOD news team bring you games that (almost) changed the world (or not). As with all news casts please come to the news website and comment on the news items. In this case tell us what you thought about the games we have found.

The first "game" in this selection is anything but a game - it is a game "ladder and bank" whatever that means. But it seemed to us that lots of features would be available for playing with Gold and so forth plus there were whispers of this being a requirement for future games.

Now on to the games:
Hangman Thread. I was unsure if this MOD ever got made but as you will see by the end of this news cast that doesn't matter too much.

This huge MOD left all others standing in shear scope if nothing else.

Here are the files and what they do.
--> games.asp - Main file. Has some text hard-coded in, so change it to read how you want it to.
--> games_blackjack.asp - Runs the blackjack game
--> games_hangman.asp - Runs the hangman game. Also needs images in /images/hangman/--> games_hangit.txt - A text file that holds all of the hangman words
--> games_snake.asp - The main snake game (also 2 images in the main folder)--> score.asp - Used as I-Frame in snake game to show score--> finalscore.asp - Snake game calls this page after finish to calculate score
--> games_tetris.asp - The main Tetris file.--> thescore.asp - A little window that pops up to display the final score. Also tallies the score for the database.
--> inc_top_short2.asp - File that contains some functions used in the pop up windows
--> games_allmembers.asp - The games.asp page shows the Top 10 Leaderboard, but this pop-up will show the entire list of members, their points, wins, losses, and total games. It is sorted by total points (gold).

All of these files are available from links on the thread linked to by this large section. It should also shortly be available at Max Web Edit as I understand that they are planning to upload the zip file to a server sometime today.

News on the Modding center?

We found that This Topic seemed to be advocating this site which seems in principle to be a great idea but lacks the support to be truely great. that seems to be a shame because these guys seem real keen.

In other news: This thread seems also to be a place to look for news and it seems that Frost has opened his own Mod -N- Theme site! Which is good.

What is needed is some way to tie these things togeather. I for one suggest swapping links might be an idea lads.

New Talk of a central MOD site

There has been an increase in the ammount of talk of late of starting something to co-ordinate all those great MODs.

While this is all well and good these things have been tried before and there is a certain level of feeling that this will go no where fast.

This is a shame when so much work languishes in the purdition of the unknown. Hopefully this news center will bring some releif for MOD hunters.

There has been quite a buzz around the MaxWeb Project(s)

The only problem is that the MOD section is a bit scattered. For this reason modders news has been set up.

This ATOM feed blog will hopefully provide up to date news on MODs Downloads and that sort of thing.
